If it leaks or quits

Your hot water tank is leaking: what to do now

  1. Switch off the tank's breaker

At the electrical panel, it's a double breaker, often labelled on the panel door. Switch it off. If water is getting close to the electrical panel, stay away from it and call.

  2. Close the cold water

The valve is on the cold water pipe above the tank. Turn it all the way. If it's a lever valve, set the lever across the pipe. Water stops going into the tank, and the rest of the house keeps its cold water.

  3. Protect your things and call

Lift anything that fears water off the floor: boxes, rugs, appliances. Don't touch the hot water coming out of the tank and don't open the relief valve. Then call, day or night.

Same-day emergency replacement

A leaking tank can't be repaired, and it won't get better on its own. We replace it the same day with a Giant 40 or 60 gallon.

The 40 and 60 gallon tanks ride in the van: the new tank arrives with us.

To save time, send a photo of the rating plate while you wait: it shows the size and wattage of your current tank. On site in about 4 hours.

Day and night, weekends and holidays

We pick up 24/7: nights, weekends, Christmas and Saint-Jean-Baptiste Day. A hot water tank rarely picks office hours to give out.

And the rate stays the same evenings, nights and weekends. A tank that gives out at 2 a.m. costs you no more than one that gives out at noon.

You get your price before we head over, from a photo or on the phone.

Emergency or not: how to tell

Some breakdowns can't wait. Others can wait until morning, with a lukewarm shower thrown in.

  • Urgent: water at the base of the tank that comes back after you mop it up.
  • Urgent: water near the electrical panel or an electrical outlet.
  • Urgent: a relief valve that runs nonstop, even a trickle.
  • Urgent: a hot water tank breaker that trips again after a reset.
  • Can wait a few hours: lukewarm water, popping noises, slightly rusty water.

While we're on the way

A few minutes well spent, and the replacement starts as soon as we walk in. For the details, the leaking hot water tank guide explains where the water comes from, and no hot water covers breakdowns without a leak.

  • Send a photo of the rating plate and of the whole tank.
  • Clear the way to the tank and the access to the electrical panel.
  • Find the main water shut-off, in case the tank's valve doesn't hold.
  • Keep children and pets away from the water and the tank.

Emergency hot water tank: questions

Who do I call when my hot water tank is leaking?

For an electric hot water tank in Montreal, in Laval, on the North Shore or on the South Shore, call M. Chauffe-Eau GL, 24/7. Before you call, switch off the tank's breaker and close the cold water valve above the tank.

Is a leaking hot water tank dangerous?

Yes, for three reasons: water near a 240-volt appliance, hot water that can scald, and damage that grows by the hour. Switch off the power at the panel, close the cold water, and keep your distance if water is getting close to the electrical panel.

Does it cost more to call at night?

No. The rate is the same evenings, nights and weekends as in the middle of the day. You get your price before we head over.

How long before you get here?

We're on site in about 4 hours. We pick up 24/7, and the tank is replaced the same day, in Montreal, in Laval, on the North Shore and on the South Shore.

Can I use the water while the tank is shut off?

Yes, the cold water. Closing the valve above the tank cuts it off from the rest of the house: the toilets and the cold taps keep working. On the hot side, next to nothing will come out until the tank is replaced.

Should I drain the leaking tank?

No. Switch off the power, close the cold water and leave the draining to the technician: the water in the tank can be scalding, and an old drain valve may refuse to close again.
