A 60 gallon: for which family?
For 3 to 4 people, according to CAA-Québec (June 2026). It's the tank for busy mornings: four showers, a load of laundry and a dishwasher that starts before breakfast.
The CMMTQ calculation published in La Presse reaches the same conclusion for a family of four: four 10-minute showers, one after the other, on a winter morning, call for a tank of about 48 gallons with a 4.5 kW element, or 50 gallons at 3.8 kW. A 60 covers that with room to spare.

Fewer people at home?
The kids have moved out, the house is quieter, and the 60 keeps heating water for people who aren't there anymore. In La Presse, CAA-Québec's housing advisor said it plainly: for two people, you can swap a 60 gallon for a 40. CAA-Québec also points out that a tank that's too big uses energy for nothing.

How much does a 60 gallon hot water tank cost with installation?
It depends on what we find at your place: access, fittings, anything that needs adding. Send a photo of the rating plate and the space around the tank. We'll get back to you with your price, installation included, in under an hour.
How long does a 60 gallon hot water tank last?
CAA-Québec generally puts it at 10 to 15 years depending on the manufacturer, and notes that most home insurers require a replacement after 10 years. With hard water, the anode, the rod that protects the tank from corrosion, wears faster; CAA-Québec then recommends an aluminum anode. More in our guide to hot water tank lifespan.
How many amps does a 60 gallon hot water tank need?
With a 4,500 W element, common on this size, the math is 4,500 ÷ 240 = about 18.8 amps. At 240 V, Giant's manual then recommends a 25 A breaker and #10 wire. Some 60 gallon tanks have a 3,800 W element: about 15.8 A and a 20 A breaker. We confirm the model's wattage with your price.
Does a 60 gallon take up much more room than a 40?
It's taller and a little wider. On Giant's Standard spec sheet, this size measures 24 inches in diameter (61 cm) and close to 60 inches tall (152 cm), against 22 by just over 49 for the 40. Measure the space, or send us a photo taken from a step or two back.
Does a 60 gallon cost more to keep hot?
A little. In CAA-Québec's examples, a 60 gallon loses around 75 to 95 watts of heat, against 50 to 70 watts for a 40. If your 60 never runs out, a 40 might do the job.
What is a three-element hot water tank?
A model like Giant's ECOPEAK, developed with Hydro-Québec. According to CAA-Québec, comfort is comparable to a standard model, with no extra savings, and hot water comes back more slowly after heavy use. It could, however, use less electricity during winter peak events under Hydro-Québec's rates. We install it too: if the ECOPEAK interests you, say so in your request.
